Discipleship
What is Discipleship.
Christian Discipleship - Fulfilling the Great Commission Christian discipleship is summed up in the Great Commission.
After the resurrection and before He ascended into heaven, Jesus appeared one last time to His disciples. This is the moment that He delivered the famous calling for disciples known as The Great Commission:
"All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age."
(Matthew 28:18b-20)

Our Father who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy name.
Thy kingdom come.
Thy will be done

The Catholic Church sees the Mass as the most perfect way it has to offer adoration (latria) to God.
Jesus at his Last Supper, offered up to God the Father His own body and blood under the species of bread and wine; and, under the symbols of those same things, He delivered (His own body and blood) to be received by His apostles. Do this in commemoration of me.

Sacraments of Initiation Session
|
The Sacraments of Initiation
A sacrament is “an outward sign of inward grace”. It is a religious act which has a spiritual meaning given to it by the words and actions of Jesus. Through the Sacraments Catholics grow in the love of God. There are seven sacraments.
Baptism, Confirmation and The Eucharist are all sacraments of initiation through which the person becomes a full member of the Church.
Reconciliation and Anointing of the Sick are sacraments of healing. They are concerned with receiving forgiveness, strength and healing.
Marriage and Holy Orders are sacraments of ministry, ways in which we are called by God. These two sacraments are looked at elsewhere.
Baptism.
Baptism is the first sacrament of initiation. Initiation means ‘bringing into membership of, learning to belong’. In baptism the person becomes a Christian, they receive the new life of God within them and they begin their journey of faith. Baptism means immersed in water.
Signs and Symbols of Baptism
WATER: A symbol of life and death (death to sin and rising to new life with God).
WHITE GARMENT: A sign of a new beginning, new life and new faith with Jesus Christ.
OIL: There are 2 kinds:
CATECHUMENS - a symbol of strength
CHRISM - a symbol of being chosen for a special task.
CANDLE: This is a symbol of the child receiving the light of Christ. Jesus is the light of the world.
WORDS and GESTURES: The key words in the ceremony when the water is poured over the baby’s head are: "I baptise you in the name of the Father, and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen”. The sign of the cross signifies the saving power of the crucifixion of Jesus. The child now belongs to God.
Confirmation.
Confirm means to strengthen/make clear what has already been agreed.
At confirmation the person makes their baptismal vows for themselves. This sacrament seals a person with the gift of the Holy Spirit. The person receives the strength and courage to be a witness for Christ in the world. The person becomes a religious adult living their Christian life with knowledge and understanding.
Signs and symbols of Confirmation.
THE LAYING ON OF HANDS: A sign that the power and strength are being given by God through the power of the Holy Spirit.
CHRISM: a sign of being set apart for an important task. A sign of being strengthened by the Holy Spirit to meet the difficulties and challenges of being a Christian.
SIGN OF THE CROSS: A sign that the person belongs to God, it seals them in the love of God.
SIGN OF PEACE: The dove is a symbol of the Holy spirit. This brings a person peace with God and others.
NAMING: In the Bible God always called people by their name before giving them a special task. A name given at Confirmation is a sign that they too are being given a special task - to be a witness to Christ.
Eucharist.
The origin of the Eucharist is found in the Passover recounted in the book of Exodus. Jesus celebrated the Passover meal with his disciples the night before He died. Jesus made it clear that he was the Passover lamb, who would die for forgiveness of sins. At this meal, the Last Supper, Jesus took the bread and said ‘This is my body’ and the wine and said ‘This is my blood’. Jesus told His apostles to repeat this celebration in memory of Him. The first account of the institution of the Eucharist is found in Paul’s letter to the Corinthians.
Eucharist means thanksgiving. It is also known as Mass and Holy Communion.
Important Bible Passages
Mark 1:9-11 The Baptism of Jesus.
Matthew 28:18-20 The Commission.

Session 8 - Fair Trade, Justice and Peace
|
Oxfam Fair Trade
What is Fair Trade
Fairtrade is about better prices, decent working conditions, local sustainability, and fair terms of trade for farmers and workers in the developing world.
By requiring companies to pay sustainable prices (which must never fall lower than the market price), Fairtrade addresses the injustices of conventional trade, which traditionally discriminates against the poorest, weakest producers. It enables them to improve their position and have more control over their lives.

Poor countries are still repaying unaffordable loans which the UK and the rest of the rich world gave irresponsibly. Some of these were to oppressive regimes, often for arms sales. Others were for useless projects from which only Western companies benefited. Still others were on unfair terms.

Cast Your Nets on the Other Side
"When he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, "Put out into deep water, and let down the nets for a catch." Simon answered, "Master, we've worked hard all night and haven't caught anything. But because you say so, I will let down the nets." When they had done so, they caught such a large number of fish that their nets began to break. So they signaled their partners in the other boat to come and help them, and they came and filled both boats so full that they began to sink. When Simon Peter saw this, he fell at Jesus' knees and said, "Go away from me, Lord; I am a sinful man!" For he and all his companions were astonished at the catch of fish they had taken, and so were James and John, the sons of Zebedee, Simon's partners. Then Jesus said to Simon, "Don't be afraid; from now on you will catch men." So they pulled their boats up on shore, left everything and followed him."
(Luke 5:4-11)

John Pridmore's Faith Journey
From Gangland to Promised Land
He was born in the east end of London. At the age of 10, his parents got divorced and he made an unconcious decision not to love any more.
At the age of 13 he had started stealing. By 15 he was put in a detention centre (a youth prison). He left home having been released. His only qualification was stealing, so that's what he did.
Quote "I now work full time for God. No one pays me. I live completely off his providence, telling my story all over the Earth."
Things to concider
- What events have occurred in your life?
- Who was with you at that time? Important people
- Who do you share the memories with now?
- How did you feel?
- Why was it important for you?
